MAD Architecture prepared a master plan for the entire complex of Valley of the Moon Winery in Sonoma County. The first phase of design and construction was the Crush Area, the 6,000 sf Barrel Cellar and the 3,000 sf Tasting Room. The 9,100 sf Steel Cellar and Bottling/Loading Area was phase two. The overall visitor/working winery complex is 26,000 sf.
TASTING ROOM Awash in Tuscan red, hand trowled plaster provides a strong texture and finish to mark the visitor’s entry into the winery complex. The Tasting Room combines many materials, stone, steel bronze, concrete, plaster and maple creating a rich visual palette. The 40′ long tasting bar is a functional sculptural piece. Large deep set windows open views to the adjacent historic vineyard. A commercial kitchen and administrative offices provide support spaces.
BARREL CELLAR A 140 year old stone building situated along Sonoma Creek, has been designed to recall its original character and stores 3,000 barrels. This building incorporates the ancient stone wall with modern trusses creating a harmonious collaboration of wood and stone, old and new.
